PFEIFFERHORN (9.96 miles, 4,137 elevation gain)

Started my day at Wasatch Running with a new pair of Brooks minimalist(ish) shoe Pure Grit II. For the last week or so I've been running with my roadies, Brooks Launch on the trail and have loved the lighter feel. Tried a few pair before settling with Pure Grit. A bit about the shoe first. Love the feel and light weight BUT not a great shoe on the rock/snow. Not the shoe's fault, I'm assuming that's not what their made for. Great summer trail shoe but I'll have to go back to the Cascadia's for a more solid, grippy, snow, mud, rock shoe. I really didn't know what I was in for today but hiking in the snow was somewhat challenged by this shoe.

I asked the boys at Wasatch about the Pfeiffer and if they knew anyone who'd been up this season. I received a unanimous "don't do it-too much snow." So of course I did it anyway.

Been anxious to get up there--love this hike/run. Started at Red Pine trailhead. smooth sailing for first couple of miles, surprisingly hitting first snow at only the 7,700 ft level. At 8,000+ (2.5 mi) after bridge to Maybird the snow got deeper and after 1/2 mile it was all snow.

Heading up to Red Pine Lake

Red Pine Lake, still partially frozen.

Still not sure what to expect heading up to the ridge and whether I'd be able to get up on Pfeifferhorn. In some respects it was easier going up the snow rather than the usual rock hopping. Lots of run-off and water everywhere.

Heading up the ridge.

Once to the ridge and on to the other side, the snow wasn't as deep. The knife ridge leading to the Pfeiffer wasn't too bad at all and mostly exposed rock.

Traveling up to the Pfeiffer was able to stay off snow and on dirt all the way to the top. Perfect day--warm, peaceful and nobody around. 2:15 to the top. Stayed for half an hour and headed back down (1:35 down).

Well heck, Kendall, one day after saying your legs are so tired from so many tough miles, you're running up Pfeifferhorn? Great job, really. I've never done that much vert in one day, but I need to. I envy the time (and strength, if we're being honest) needed to get in these kind of runs every week.

Neasts: I had no intention of doing this today. Couldn't wrap my head around a hot, boring run around the valley. Interesting how adventure changes everything--even fatigue and certainly perspective.

Wow...that was corny.

those are some beautiful pics. what a great run!

Love that mountain! One of the Wasatch classics. Did you see that the USGS (whose maps had it labeled as "Little Matterhorn") finally officially changed the name to Pfeifferhorn? They just announced it last week.

From Neasts on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 12:17:55 from 71.32.225.219

Jake, that's interesting...did the name just officially change or is the USGS just that far behind the times? And while we're on the subject, who decides those names, anyway? I'm a serious map junkie, but I hate it when I see different names for the same things on different maps.

Kendall, if what you wrote was corny, then most of what I write is, too. Most of running for me is the *experience* anymore, which is probably why I'm not very fast. :-)

I had always thought "Pfeifferhorn" meant "Little Matterhorn"...the real story is much better.

Back side down to Alpine still looking very skiable.

Jake, you beat me me to it...if only I were 30 seconds slower running I'd be one happy boy.

That's right, don't let anyone tell you you can't because of "too much snow". We should go up Timp soon.

MVH: I'm in!

From Neasts on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 20:18:03 from 71.32.225.219

Thanks for the link, Jake and Kendall. Interesting stuff. I'd go in on the Timp run if I thought I could keep up with you guys. I'm a little flat in the vert department. Are you going up from Timpanookee or Aspen Grove? I've only ever hiked up the latter...more than 20 years ago.

From Kendall on Tue, Jun 11, 2013 at 00:50:37 from 70.208.22.65

Neasts: Who are you kidding? As I recall you posted an 8 hour and change in your last 50. Of course you can/could keep up. (Although i think anybody would have a tough time hanging with MVH right now--he's out of his mind!) Timpanookee for me. It's more runable and I believe more scenic. Its also fun going up Aspen Grove and down Timpanookee. We need to do this!

The Pfeiff is one of my favorite peaks in the Wasatch. Very nice outing. I really loved my Cascadias, but one thing I didn't like was after about 200 miles they didn't seem to do as well in the snow. I think the newer models might be a bit better with the tread though. One great thing about them is they are basically bomb proof. I have a few pairs with over 600 miles and the uppers still look brand new.

Timp next week. I'm in.
